AHU Compliance to HTM-03-01 (2021)

A Daikin Applied (UK) CPD Training Session

Learn How to Design AHUs That Meet NHS Healthcare Ventilation Standards

As healthcare ventilation standards evolve, understanding the requirements of HTM-03-01 (2021) is essential for anyone involved in designing, specifying, or operating ventilation systems in clinical environments.

This free CPD session from Daikin Applied (UK) provides clear guidance on designing compliant systems, selecting appropriate components, and understanding the technical implications of the latest healthcare ventilation standards.

Whether working on new hospital builds or upgrading existing systems, this session will help you apply best practices in healthcare AHU design.

What Will You Learn?

What is HTM-03-01 and why is it important?

HTM-03-01 is a Healthcare Technical Memorandum published by NHS England. It provides detailed guidance on designing, installing and operating ventilation systems in healthcare settings. Although not mandatory, derogations must be authorised with equivalent levels of safety and performance.

The CPD explains the difference between Part A (design and validation) and Part B (operational management), and why early-stage understanding of HTM-03-01 matters.

Key changes in the 2021 update

The session highlights updates made to the 2007 version, including:

  • The change from BS EN 779 to ISO 16890 for filter classification

  • Revised component layout and construction standards

  • More specific guidance on access, casing, fans, and filtration

  • Relaxed limits on coil sizing and air velocities

  • Emphasis on HEPA, EPA, and safe-change filter installations

AHU design requirements for compliance

The CPD explores the impact of poor design or cutting corners under value engineering, including:

  • Hygiene and infection control risks

  • Additional costs from rework or regulatory issues

  • Inconsistent air quality performance in sensitive areas
